Modular Home Versus Mobile Homes

It can be easy to confuse a modular home with a mobile home; however, there are some key differences between the two you should be aware of. In this article, we’ll discuss the differences. We hope this blog will help you decide whether to choose a modular home or a mobile home for your family.

Modular Home

What constitutes a mobile home?

Mobile homes were introduced in 1976 where the HUD (Housing and Urban Development administration) created new rules to enable safer constructional and installation standards for all factory-built homes. They can be located at either a mobile home park or on a personal stretch of land. Mobile homes have steel beams that run along the underside where they act as support. These l-beams are traditionally set on either concrete, metal, or wood in order to anchor them to the ground.

Is a modular home better?

Although more expensive, modular homes carry a number of advantages over mobile homes. These factory-made homes are much more structurally sound versus mobile homes. In fact, modular homes are built to the same strict standards as site-built homes, except they cost much less than their on-site counterparts. Modular homes also benefit from being immune to delays caused by weather such as snow or rain. Once a modular home is implemented, inspectors must approve both utility and building codes of the home.

Which is better?

This boils down to a question of budget. Modular homes are more expensive than mobile homes but less expensive than traditional on-site homes. Modular homes can also become indistinguishable from traditional homes. Some consider modular homes to be the future of all “mobile” home units because of their clear advantages.
